So if you’ve read any of the websites and guide books you know that one of the recommended stops in Shinjuku is Omoide Yokocho, or “piss alley.” I can see now why it might be called that….
It’s located just north of the main station, beyond the Keio and Odakyu plaza and on up a bit, to the east of everything, sort of below things. If you weren’t looking for it, you’d never even know it was there.
A series of tiny little restaurants along a tiny little street, if you want to call it that, the myth far outweighs the actual experience. We walked through fairly quickly, the smells alternating between brilliant cooking from the stalls and, well, something else entirely.
When we reached the end we kind of looked at each other and went, “uh, yeah. At least we can say we were here!” That about sums it up.

Let me assure you, walking through it at day time is lame, indeed. But as soon as it becomes dark outside and the first wave of salary man is rushing into the place it is fascinating as hell! Walking through does not do the trick. You have to sit down. Eat, laugh and start even with the little english they speak a conversation. Thats when you can get a taste of the place and the Japanese culture.
