Descending the flight of stairs from Yasukuni dori, which looked like it could be a subway entrance, was instead the entrance to a vast underground shopping complex, the Shinjuku Subnade.
Down here in the Subnade, it was a different world. The bustle and garishness above gave way to a quiet, almost western-style shopping mall experience. Mainly fashion stores, with a few restaurants, drugstore type shops, and a totally awesome grocery store. We would be back here later….
Once the facilities had been, um, utilized, the next task was finding a way out. We did, but soon realized we were now on the north side of the station, actually in an entirely different station, Seibu Shinjuku. Ah well, time to start heading back to the hotel to catch a breather. But not before we needed to find someplace to eat.
We got a killer bowl of tendon (天丼) at a Tenya. Tempura shrimp and vegetables over rice, with some cold tea which hit the spot. About that time it started raining, which wasn’t unexpected. So we hit it back to the hotel to take a load off… But we had one more brief stop to make…
