After leaving Hanazono Shrine, it was just a quick jump down a short flight of stairs and there it was, staring us in the face. The “Golden Gai” neighborhood.
“Golden Gai” is a small block of tiny bars and galleries tucked away behind the hustle of the rest of Tokyo. Yeah, OK, I’m sure it picks up at night, but when we were there in the early-mid-morning there wasn’t anyone but delivery trucks and workmen in the area. Rather than wander aimlessly through the tiny streets looking for trouble (and getting ourselves lost) we just snapped a few photos and left. The few people that were there seemed to be eye-ing us rather strangely, but not in a threatening way, which sped us along a bit more….
If my Japanese were better and I was a bit more daring I might have ventured back here at night just to see what the hub-bub was about. The stories range from “they don’t like foreigners” to “they love foreigners!” at the little pubs here, and all stops in between. Besides, we had plenty more to see, and I’d be able to say I was there. And I’ve got the photos to prove it!
